Mr Hammond is a soldier in the 16th Regiment of Foot of the British Army, under the leadership of Colonel Watson. His friends include Mr Graham and Lord Sutton. He grew up in Darlington before going into the militia.
Whilst visiting an art collection at Mr Powell's Manor, Mr Hammond is transfixed by the depiction of domestic bliss found in a painting. He is wished well by the protagonist shortly after her engagement to Mr Graham, in the hope that he could attain the same happiness. It is unclear whether his desires are realised. In one possible ending, Mr Graham attends a military funeral for Mr Hammond.
